Umckaloabo (Pelargonium sidoides) grows in the soils of the Eastern Cape of South Africa. For hundreds of years, the root of this hardy plant was used for its unique support of the respiratory system by the semi-nomadic people who lived there. In the early 1900’s, the reliable power of Umckaloabo made its way to Europe by a man who claimed the root was given to him in South Africa by an herbal healer experienced with its use. The Umckaloabo helped him through a difficult respiratory issue, and he brought some Umckaloabo roots back to Europe with him. The root was investigated, and extracts were made as samples. After seeing its success, a popular extract of the herb was mass produced and used by thousands of Europeans for occasional and mild sniffling and sneezing.
I was introduced to this herb by a fellow medicinal herb lover who swore of its reliable, unique abilities helping himself and family members in a time of need, when even Oregano Oil did not provide any relief. For certain health issues, when Oregano Oil fails to help, but another herb does, I tend to immediately drop whatever I’m doing and look deeply into such an anomaly.
Looking into the history of this herb and the particular actions Umckaloabo has on human physiology, along with first hand accounts it helping my friend and his family, it was only a matter of time before Umckaloabo ended up on this site.
Legend has it the name Umckaloabo is a Zulu term and means “heavy cough”. Perhaps the name came later during its promotion in Europe as a remedy which would soothe the respiratory system during occasional coughing and sneezing. In any case, it will be a welcome name to all it helps.
The Umckaloabo extract has a vibrant red color, which usually signals libido boosting abilities. Many herbs known for their libido enhancing effects have a deep red to slightly reddish color, Red Ginseng, Huanarpo Macho, Catuaba, Iporuru, Clavo Huasca, Muira Puama, Chuchuhuasi, and Kigelia Africana posess different shades of red in the final extract. It was surprising to find Umckaloabo has no historical record detailing its use as a libido booster, but I suppose it is open to experimentation.
The beautiful red color of the Umckaloabo extract comes from the small roots of the Umckaloabo plant, which are reddish/burgundy and contain powerful flavonoids like catechin, quercetin, and gallocatechin, polyphenols like gallic acids and coumarins, which all help to lend the roots of this plant their reddish color. These plant chemicals have a direct positive influence on the respiratory system.
This is a strong extract of Umckaloabo roots sourced directly from South Africa. The roots are laboratory tested and are guaranteed to be the genuine South African Umckaloabo plant roots. The amount needed for the desired effect seems to be just a few drops.
Umckaloabo increases the speed of movement if the cilia, small hairs which coat the bronchiole tubes of the lungs and the respiratory tract. These tiny hairs have a rhythmic sweeping motion which helps clear the lungs of foreign particles and clear out excess mucus. By increasing the speed at which these hairs move, Umckaloabo helps clear out mild and occasional periods of excess mucus.
Umckaloabo has other unique actions on the respiratory system, a few minutes of research into this profound gift from Nature will be well rewarded.
